MTN Mobile Money (MTN MoMo) has officially taken over management of Lira Main Market as part of a new initiative to clean and beautify the city’s central commercial hub.
The handover ceremony was led by His Worship Sam Atul, Mayor of Lira City, and attended by MTN MoMo officials, including Chief Commercial Officer Keith Tukei, alongside city officials, market traders, and residents.
Immediately after the handover, participants joined a city-led cleaning exercise across the market, removing litter and organizing trading spaces.
The activity was designed to promote hygiene, safety, and a more welcoming environment for both traders and shoppers.
Speaking at the event, Phillip Odoi, Regional Commercial Head at MTN Uganda, said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to supporting local communities and urban development.
“By partnering with Lira City on this project, we are helping create cleaner, safer, and more vibrant spaces where businesses and people can thrive,” Odoi said.
Mayor Atul welcomed the partnership, noting that it aligns with the city’s long-term plans to become a competitive and environmentally responsible urban center.
“This initiative helps us maintain Lira Main Market as a tidy and attractive place for trade. We look forward to continued collaboration with MTN MoMo as we work to modernize our city,” he said.
The handover and cleaning exercise form part of ongoing efforts to enhance Lira’s urban spaces and demonstrate the positive impact of public-private partnerships in city development.
